The Vendée coastal area

Geography

The Vendée coast, stretching from Bourgneuf Bay and Noirmoutier Island in the north to La Tranche sur mer in the south is made up of varied landscapes but is typified by long sandy beaches and expanses of sand dunes. The islands of Noirmoutier and Yeu are major features.
Les Sables d'Olonne and Saint-Gilles Croix de Vie are the most important coastal ports, the former being particularly renowned as the departure port of the Vendee round-the-world single-handed yacht race and the Route du Rhum transatlantic single-handed yacht race.

The Vendée marshlands

There are two marshland areas of outstanding natural beauty. The first around Bouin and Challans is home to an exceptional variety of bird species including heron, cormorants and aigrettes.
Further south lie the famous Poitevin Marshes, nicknamed “Green Venice” which make for a great day out. Criss-crossed with a maze of picturesque canals, enjoy the calm by renting a riverboat, punt or canoe.

The renowned Puy du Fou outdoor Spectacle

Unique in Europe this extraordinary show features more than 2000 volunteers who create a historical show retracing the history of the Vendee region, in particular the story of the Chouans in the late 18th century, a movement established to counter the French Revolution.
Thanks to spectacular special effects, breathtaking stunts and giant moving sets, you will see Gladiators in the arena, experience Viking attacks and medieval battles. And with over 10 million spectators, 1,200 actors and 8,000 costumes, the world’s biggest night-time show has become a legend not to be missed.
